WHY WE DO IT

Our Mission
The National Black College Alliance is creating the next generation of urban civic leaders by encouraging community volunteerism and college education to high school students while promoting Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We recognize the outstanding contributions that HBCUs and their alumni have made to American society and our work is in the tradition of excellence and service to our communities established by these esteemed educational institutions.

Supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Historically Black Colleges and Universities are an integral part of African-American history. Since 1854, when the first college for African-American men was incorporated, HBCUs have taken responsibility for Black America’s education and development. Now numbering over one hundred, HBCUs were the primary source of higher education for African-Americans well into the twentieth century. These institutions continue to support Black Americans to reach their full potential by cultivating their students’ self-esteem, pride, self-awareness, intellectual motivation, and leadership skills.

While HBCUs are only three percent of America’s college and universities and enroll less than 20% of Black undergraduates, they produce one-third of all Black graduates
HBCU graduates account for half of all African Americans with masters degrees
43% of all African Americans who go on to earn doctorate degrees graduated from HBCUs
HBCUs have produced 35% of all Black lawyers, 50% of all Black engineers, 65% of all Black physicians, 75% of all Black officers in the military, and 80% of all Black federal judges in the U.S.

The National Black College Alliance seeks to promote these institutions to Black youth who may never have heard of them. We believe that HBCUs are an invaluable resource in American cultural life, and NBCA works to support the continued vitality and excellence of these proud institutions.

Building Community
Ultimately, our work is dedicated to creating healthy urban communities. To do that, we form a community of youth, college students, HBCU alumni, and anyone else who wants to work with us. By bringing together this variety of people, we forge strategic links between community-based organizations, historically Black colleges, government agencies, national organizations, and corporations. This community is joined by a vision and exists to support all its members in their civic and philanthropic aspirations.
